T-Bill Yield Calculator India (Calculate Returns)

This Treasury Bill (T-Bill) Calculator is designed for Indian investors looking to calculate the maturity amount and interest earned on Government of India Treasury Bills.

T-Bills are considered one of the safest short-term investments in India as they are backed by the sovereign guarantee of the Government. Whether you are investing in the standard 91-day, 182-day, or 364-day T-Bills via RBI Retail Direct or your broker, this tool helps you verify your returns.

How to Calculate T-Bill Returns?

Unlike fixed deposits where interest is paid out, T-Bills are typically issued at a discount and redeemed at face value. However, for simplicity, investors often calculate returns based on the annualized yield.

Where:

  • Principal: The amount you are investing (e.g., ₹1,00,000).

  • Yield: The annualized percentage yield (indicative yield at the time of auction).

  • Days: The tenure of the bill (Standard tenures are 91, 182, or 364 days).

Why Invest in T-Bills?

  1. Zero Default Risk: Since they are issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on behalf of the Government, the risk of default is practically nil.

  2. Better than Savings: In a rising interest rate environment, T-Bill yields often outperform standard savings bank interest rates.

  3. Liquidity: T-Bills are traded in the secondary market, meaning you can sell them before maturity if you need funds (though this may affect your final return).

Note on Taxation

It is important to remember that the profit earned from T-Bills (the difference between the issue price and the redemption value) is treated as Short Term Capital Gains (STCG).

This income is added to your total annual income and taxed according to your applicable Income Tax Slab rates. There is no TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on T-Bills, but you must declare the interest in your ITR.
